Instructions
Find a comfortable place sitting or lying down where you can be fully relaxed and open to the ideas and energy of this guided meditation. After settling down, take three long, deep breaths to calm and empty yourself.
Purpose of this Meditation
The purpose of this guided meditation is to help you to release any fear you have about the death of any form. Whenever death ends one aspect or form of life, it opens up or creates another form of life. In this meditation, you have the opportunity to name a person or thing that is dying, facing death, or dead. You insert the name of that person/thing where you see (name).
A Guided Meditation, Written
I use this vehicle of the written word to share this guided meditation. This is a transcription of a spontaneous meditation. I consider my meditations are primarily a transfer of energy rather than knowledge or words. I use repetition to anchor the energy, rather than as a strategy to press a particular point or fact. The guidance allows you to have your own unique experience.
Reading this Meditation
This guided meditation is designed for you to read aloud for yourself. You are likely to find that an audio tape recording is particularly effective. Speed reading this meditation is unlikely to accelerate spiritual progress! In fact, speaking slowly in a monotone is beneficial when guiding this meditation, even though such an approach is generally frowned upon in public speaking.
The designation "......" indicates a pause, during which you may choose to be quiet or close your eyes and experience whatever comes to you. The ...... may look awkward as you glance at the page. However, when you are reading the meditation it serves as a reminder to slow down generally and pause at that place.
Fear of Death; Death of Fear
(A guided Meditation for You)
And so now is a time to relax, to let go of fear about death. This fear may be related to your own physical death, to somebody else's death, to the death of some part of your life, or to the death of a relationship with someone or something. The death may be a loss that you are facing now, anticipating in the future, or ready to complete. ......
As you breathe in, breathe in light and clarity and peace. ...... As you breathe out, breathe out fear and anxiety and anything else that gets in the way of your feeling at peace with who you are and what you are facing in your life. ......
Imagine that you are sitting or standing in a safe place. ...... This may be a special place in nature, or your own favorite room in your home, or a place deep within your imagination that appears not to be physical at all. ...... It is safe. You feel supported. If it feels more safe to be alone, you are alone; if it feels more safe to be with someone else, you are with someone else. Let this be a comfortable, familiar, and precious time to explore life in a new and wondrous way. ......
Pay attention to your breathing and let it deepen. Notice the in-breath, breathing life into all parts of your body. Let all your cells open so that they can release anything that you are not wanting or needing. ...... You may not know what you are releasing. Simply let it go. ...... Relax, and be at peace. ......
Now, give your attention to your mind's eye. Let your mind's eye open up so that you can see more clearly with your eyes closed. ...... Now, bring into your awareness a subject that you will focus on for for the rest of this meditation. ...... Perhaps you choose to focus on some aspect of your life that is dying, or has died. ...... Or a person. Or a habit. Or a lifestyle. Take the time you need in order to identify the aspect or thing or person or part. Close your eyes to focus more clearly. ...... Give this focus a name. ......
Now, move yourself in consciousness to a time when (name) was young or beginning or new or vibrant. ...... Allow images to come to you. Let memories surround you. ...... Feel the sensations of this aliveness, this experience of newness or beginning. ...... Notice the color of (name). ...... Let it be whatever color it is, and also explore different facets that may show a spectrum of colors. ...... Notice, not trying to make anything happen that is not natural. Notice yourself as you explore (name) and also notice as many aspects of this thing, or idea, or person, or fear, or dynamic that are possible for you to notice. ......
Now explore the shape of (name). Perhaps it is round, square, or jagged with clearly defined lines or perhaps it has a muddied or foggy perimeter. ...... You may even find that you poke at it to intentionally change its shape. ...... Or hold it carefully in your hands to allow it to change. ...... As you touch (name) in your mind's eye or touch it through your fingers or some other part of your physical body, notice how it feels. Notice the texture, ...... the temperature, ...... the sensations. ...... Let (name) speak to you through your touch. ......
Move now to a deeper place of peace, as you explore how close (name) was to you during its greatest vitality. ...... Regardless of the state of (name) today, give your attention to that time of newness or youth or fullness or beginning. ...... Feel or sense the connection: close, far away, touching, distant, intimate, merged with you, at one. Notice. ...... Notice, and be at peace. ......
And now, allow yourself to communicate the most important question that you have for (name) when it was in its greatest vitality. The question may be as simple as "Who are you?" ...... Or the question may be about the higher purpose of its relationship to you. Ask the deepest and most meaningful question to or about (name) that comes into your awareness right now. ...... Take your time; there's no hurry. ...... Talk with (name) as long as you want or need. ......
As you come to completion with your questions for (name) at the height of its vitality, move yourself easily and effortlessly to (name) as it is today: dying, or needing to die, or already dead, or facing death or loss. ...... Keep with you that sense of peace and be as comfortable with feeling grief as with feeling joy. ...... If fear gets in the way, ask it to leave. Let yourself feel the grief or sorrow or loss without the fear. ......
Now take (name) to the edge of a tunnel. See this tunnel or imagine it; experience it in whatever way is the most comfortable or appropriate. Step into the tunnel and notice your sensations and feelings. At the end of that tunnel -- looking forward or upward -- see the light. Proceed now through the tunnel. Be assured that at the end of that tunnel, the light is filled with a greater sense of peace and joy than you and (name) have ever experienced before. ......
Breathe deeply now as you walk through the tunnel. ...... You may notice shadows and stars and valleys and mountains. You may find the ground beneath your feet is smooth or rocky. ...... You may feel pulled into the tunnel or you may have a sense of pushing yourself back. You may want to run forward or fly upward -- going faster toward the light. Or you may want to linger along the journey. ...... Notice and be gentle with yourself. ...... Love yourself through this tunnel. ...... It can be a place of no-time, without urgency or a place of acceleration of time. ......
When you get to the end of the tunnel, just before stepping into the light, feel the sense of joy. ...... Stop, if you wish, and turn around. Look at the tunnel that you have just moved through. Look at (name). ...... See (name) come alive in a new way as it dies to the old. You know that when you step into the light you are not tempted to step back into the darkness. ...... You feel complete, eager, expectant, filled with joy, ready for life. ......
Feel yourself return to a new awareness or a new respect for your life as it exists right now in this present moment. You have no need to wait for anything or anyone. No condition or circumstance needs to change. ...... Feel the peace of being yourself right now. ...... Free from fear. Free from the fear of death. ...... Free. ...... At peace. ...... Right now.
